Céline Papion is a curious and versatile artist – cellist, performer, concert designer and artistic director. She wanders between early and contemporary music as well as music theatre and free improvisation. Her work and commitment to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries was honoured in 2019 with the “Internationale Bodensee-Konferenz” award in the category of interpretation of contemporary music.

Céline trained in France with renowned cellists and teachers such as Raphaële Sémésiz (Orléans), Hélène Dautry, Ophélie Gaillard and Philippe Müller (Paris). She then travelled to Germany, where she rounded off her training with Jean-Guihen Queyras (HMDK Stuttgart) and Francis Gouton (HfM Trossingen). During her studies, she was a scholarship holder of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Live Music Now. She later received further scholarships such as the Musikfonds scholarship as part of the NEUSTART KULTUR programme (2021), the INITIAL special scholarship from the Akademie der Künste Berlin together with the composer Yiran Zhao (2021-22), the Goethe Institute scholarship (2022) and the Deutscher Musikrat scholarship (2023).

Byways & interdisciplinarity
Today, with a passion for artistic adventures and byways, she initiates, designs, performs and directs her own projects. Her interest in experimental and interdisciplinary formats is crystallised in projects such as the  PUSS Festival (2017), OTTO (2018-19) and Sonic Ocean (2022).

Continuous exchange with composers and contemporary artists also plays an important role. Céline works closely with composers such as I-lly Cheng, Toshio Hosokawa, Steffen Krebber, Joseph Michaels, Oliver S. Frick and Yiran Zhao. She also collaborates with the visual artists Aldo van den Broek and Rose Octopus, the video artists Deema Shahin and Hanae Utamura, the light artist Kurt Laurenz Theinert, the actress Franziska Schmitz, the directors Brigitte Dethier, Julia Dina Heße, Sebastian Bauer and Anna Drescher. She regularly performs with contemporary music ensembles such as lovemusic, Reactive Ensemble, ensemble cross.art, as well as early music ensembles such as Ensemble il capriccio, Stiftsbarock & Stimmkunst Stuttgart and Arsys Bourgogne. She is a founding member and board member of the Stuttgarter Kollektiv für aktuelle Musik.

Performance & music theatre
Since 2008, Céline has focused her work in the performative field, exploring the format of new music theatre and premiering her own project “OTTO” in 2018-19. She has performed at theatres such as Theater Junges Ensemble Stuttgart, Gare du Nord Basel, Württembergische Landesbühne Esslingen, zeitraumexit Mannheim and Theater Rampe Stuttgart.

She is a guest at international festivals and concert series, including the “Südseite nachts” at Musik der Jahrhunderte in Stuttgart, the Haendel-Festspielen Göttingen, the “Musiktheaterformen” at Gare du Nord Basel, the Sinuston Festival Magdeburg, the 1×1 series at EinTanzHaus Mannheim, the Arsmondo – Opera national du Rhin festival (France), the Music Series at NUI Maynooth and UCC Cork (Ireland) as well as the Música Hoje Bienale for New Music in Curitiba and CPFL Cultura Campinas (Brazil).
She was invited as an artist-in-residence at the Borneo Laboratory (Malaysia, 2017), at the Theater Rampe Stuttgart (2020-21) and at the Treasure Hill Artist Village Taipei (Taiwan, 2022 & 2024).

Free improvisation
The decisive encounter with the cellist, improviser and teacher Scott Roller opened the doors to free improvisation wide open for her. She has been a member and co-director of the Open_Music ensemble since 2023. Improvisation projects also lead her to play with musicians such as Paul Hübner, Sascha Henkel, Masako Ohta, Joss Turnbull and dancers from Saal FREI Stuttgart.

Pedagogy
In the context of her work with Open_Music, her experience with the Junges Ensemble Stuttgart and her own projects, Céline develops performative and educational formats for young audiences. She teaches cello at the grammar schools “Helene-Lange-Gymnasium” in Markgröningen and “Heidehof-Gymnasium” in Stuttgart, which specialise in art and music.

Céline Papion ist eine neugierige und vielseitige Künstlerin – Cellistin, Performerin, Konzert-Designerin und Künstlerische Leiterin. Sie wandert zwischen alter und zeitgenössischer Musik sowie Musiktheater und freier Improvisation. Ihre Arbeit und ihr Engagement für die Musik des 20. und 21. Jh. wurde 2019 mit dem Förderpreis der „Internationale Bodensee-Konferenz” in der Sparte Interpretation zeitgenössischer Musik ausgezeichnet.

Céline wurde in Frankreich bei renommierten Cellist*innen und Pädagog*innen wie Raphaële Sémésiz (Orléans), Hélène Dautry, Ophélie Gaillard und Philippe Müller (Paris) ausgebildet. Danach ging die Reise nach Deutschland, wo sie bei Jean-Guihen Queyras (HMDK Stuttgart) und Francis Gouton (HfM Trossingen) ihre Ausbildung abrundete. Während ihres Studiums war sie Stipendiatin der Yehudi-Menuhin-Stiftung Live Music Now. Später erhielt sie weitere Stipendien wie das Stipendium des Musikfonds im Rahmen des Programms NEUSTART KULTUR (2021), das INITIAL Sonderstipendium der Akademie der Künste Berlin zusammen mit der Komponistin Yiran Zhao (2021-22), das Goethe Institut Stipendium (2022) und das Stipendium des deutschen Musikrats (2023).

Schleichwege & Interdisziplinarirät
Heute, mit einer Leidenschaft für künstlerische Abenteuer und Schleichwege, initiiert, konzipiert, spielt und leitet sie ihre eigenen Projekte. Ihr Interesse an experimentellen und interdisziplinären Formaten kristallisiert sich in Projekten wie dem PUSS Festival (2017), OTTO (2018-19), Sonic Ocean (2022).

Freie Improvisation
Die ausschlaggebende Begegnung mit dem Cellisten, Improvisator und Pädagogen Scott Roller öffnet ihr die Türen zur freien Improvisation weit. Seit 2023 ist sie Mitglied und Co-Leiterin des Ensembles Open_Music. Improvisation Projekte führen sie auch zur Spielen mit Musiker*innen wie Paul Hübner, Sascha Henkel, Masako Ohta, Joss Turnbull und Tänzer*innen von Saal FREI Stuttgart.

Vermittlung & Pädagogie
Im Kontext ihrer Arbeit mit Open_Music, ihrer Erfahrung mit dem Jungen Ensemble Stuttgart und ihren eigenen Projekten entwickelt Céline performative und Vermittlungsformate für ein junges Publikum. Sie unterrichtet Cello an den auf Kunst und Musik spezialisierten Gymnasien „Helene-Lange-Gymnasium” in Markgröningen und „Heidehof-Gymnasium” in Stuttgart.

Céline Papion est une artiste curieuse et éclectique- violoncelliste, performeuse mais aussi “Konzert-Designer” ou directrice artistique. Elle navigue entre la musique ancienne et contemporaine ainsi que le théâtre musical et l’improvisation libre. Son travail et son engagement pour la musique des 20e et 21e siècles on été récompensés par le Prix “International Bodensee-Konferenz” pour l’interprétation de la musique contemporaine en 2019.

Céline s’est formée en France auprès de violoncellistes et pédagogues de renoms tel·le·s que Raphaële Sémézis (Orléans) et Hélène Dautry, Ophélie Gaillard et Philippe Müller (Paris). Puis elle part se perfectionner en Allemagne auprès Jean-Guihen Queyras (HMDK Stuttgart) et de Francis Gouton (HfM Trossingen). Durant ses études, Céline Papion a bénéficié du soutien de la Fondation Yehudi-Menuhin, Live Music Now. Par la suite, elle a reçu d’autres bourses telles que la bourse du Musikfonds dans le cadre du programme NEUSTART KULTUR (2021), la bourse spéciale INITIAL de l’Akademie der Künste Berlin avec la compositrice Yiran Zhao (2021-22), la bourse de l’Institut Goethe (2022) et la bourse du Deutscher Musikrat (2023).

Chemins de traverses & interdisciplinarité
Aujourd’hui, passionnée d’aventures artistiques et de chemins de traverses, elle initie, conçoit, joue et dirige ses propres projets. Son intérêt pour les formats expérimentaux et interdisciplinaires se cristalisent dans des projets comme le PUSS Festival (2017), OTTO (2018-19), Sonic Ocean (2022).

Improvisation libre

Dans le contexte de son travail avec Open_Music, de son expérience avec le Jungen Ensemble Stuttgart et de ses propres projets, Céline développe des formats performatifs et pédagogiques pour un jeune public. Elle enseigne le violoncelle dans les lycées spécialisés pour les arts plastiques et la musique “Helene-Lange-Gymnasium” à Markgröningen et “Heidehof-Gymnasium” à Stuttgart.
